Tenure means little. It might get your to middle management, but unless you're brilliant, sleeping with the right people, lucky etc., it won't get you further. On the other hand, while moving up by changing jobs is a quick way to promotion, you also risk not being experienced enough to get to the top.
Why not read some CEO biographies and see what route they took?
