Message Delivery Notifications are only in scope for as AS2 adapter. Not for SFTP communication.
Both AS2 and SFTP are fine. Up to you to choose.
The SFTP adapter is a separate download and requires no license at all.
Perhaps that could accelerate your choice.
In any case, these scenarios are easy to build and monitor. All is out-of-the-box available and standard SAP.
