Unable to fetch navigation nodes - Ajax framework customization

I am following below tutorial to create a Ajax framework page

The Masthead UI part appears fine but navigation nodes assigned to my id (content admin, system admin and user admin) must appear. But these dor not appear on the page.

The tutorial talks about executing below method for getting navigation nodes
